শসা বাংলাদেশের প্রধান ও জনপ্রিয় সবজি সমূহের মধ্যে অন্যতম। শসা প্রধানত সালাত ও সবজি হিসেবে খাওয়া হয়। শসার প্রতি ১০০ গ্রাম ভক্ষণযোগ্য অংশে ৯৬% জলীয় অংশ, ০.৬ গ্রাম আমিষ, ২.৬ গ্রাম শ্বেতসার, ১৮ মিঃ গ্রাম ক্যালসিয়াম, ০.২ মিঃ গ্রাম লৌহ, ক্যারোটিন ৪০ মাইক্রোগ্রাম, খাদ্যপ্রাণ সি ১০ মিঃ গ্রাম রয়েছে।

মাটি ও জলবায়ু

উর্বর দো-আঁশ মাটি ও অম্লক্ষারত্ব ৫-৫-৬.৮ শসা উৎপাদনের জন্য উপযোগী। ২৫-৩০ সেঃ গড় তাপমাত্রায় শসা সবচেয়ে ভাল জন্মে।

জাত

বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশে বেশকিছু জাতের শসার চাষ হচ্ছে এর মধ্যে বিদেশী জাতের অধিকাংশই হাইব্রিড।

বিএডিসি ২টি স্থানীয় জাত উৎপাদন করে থাকে বারোমাসি ও পটিয়া জায়ান্ট নামে।

এছাড়াও বাংলাদেশী কয়েকটি বেসরকারী সবজি বীজ উৎপাদন প্রতিষ্ঠান ইতিমধ্যেই অনেকগুলো বিশুদ্ধ জাত(op) ও হাইব্রিড (সংকর জাত) শসার জাত বাজার জাত করেছে।

জীবন কাল

সাধারণত জাত ভেদে ৭৫ থেকে ১২০ দিন পর্যন্ত হতে পারে।

বীজ বপনের সময়

ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে মার্চ মাস পর্যন্ত শসার বীজ বপন করা ভাল।

চারা উৎপাদন

নার্সারী বা বীজ তলায় চার তৈরী করে জমিতে লাগানো উত্তম। এক্ষেত্রে ৫০ঃ৫০ অনুপাতে পচা গোবর বা কম্পোষ্ট ও মাটি একত্রে মিশিয়ে ৬x৮ ইঞ্চি সাইজের পলিইথিলিয়ানের ব্যাগে ভরতে হবে। প্রতি ব্যাগে ২টি করে বীজ বপন করতে হবে।
